Wedding Dress Alterations FAQ – Expert Tips from Becca

  • While many dressmakers offer alterations, bridal gowns require a higher level of expertise due to their complexity. Wedding dresses often include delicate fabrics, lace or beading, boning, corsetry, and multiple layers, all of which demand specialised skills and careful handling.

A bridal alterations specialist is experienced in working with these elements while preserving the gown’s original structure, design, and finish. We are also trained to achieve a precise, comfortable fit, whilst also ensuring you can move with ease and confidence throughout your day.

  • You can contact me here, or I also frequently check my Facebook and Instagram messages. When messaging me please try to include as much detail as possible about your gown, what you need doing and your wedding date. I will get back to you within 1 business day.

  • Bridal alterations can vary depending on the complexity of your gown and the work required. I cap all fit alterations at $1,000, giving you complete peace of mind—no unexpected costs at your final fitting. Basic adjustments, such as a simple hem, typically fall well below this cap and can often be estimated from a photo you provide at first contact.

For design changes or customisations, pricing may exceed this cap depending on the materials and level of detail involved. These options are always discussed with you from the very beginning, so you feel informed, comfortable, and confident every step of the way.

  • For your first fitting, please bring your exact wedding shoes so we can determine the perfect length for your gown. It’s also important to wear or bring any undergarments or shapewear you plan to use, as these can affect how your dress fits and falls.

For your final fitting, I recommend bringing all your accessories, including your veil (unless it’s being made by us), jewellery, and any additional pieces such as jackets or overskirts. This is your opportunity to see your full bridal look come together—often for the first time before your wedding day.

  • Dress restyling and resizing is our speciality. To get started, simply provide a photo of your mum’s gown—either on you or an original image—along with a few inspiration pictures of the style you’re hoping to achieve.

From there, I’ll guide you through the entire process, from professional cleaning to remove any yellowing that can occur with older gowns, through to thoughtfully redesigning and incorporating new materials. The result is a beautifully refreshed gown that feels modern while still preserving its sentimental value.

  • It’s best to secure your seamstress as soon as you’ve chosen your gown. Like many wedding vendors, availability can book out quickly—especially during peak seasons. If you are excited to work with me, it’s never too early to reserve your place.

  • I am located in the Outer Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne in Ringwood. Conveniently located opposite Eastland shopping centre and the M3. Address supplied upon booking of first fitting.
